We want this to be an exciting cultural experience for our guests and would love for you to participate by wearing traditional Indian clothing to our Welcome Party! If you do wish to wear traditional Indian attire (which we encourage!), keep reading for some tips on what types of clothes you can / should wear and where to buy or rent it. If you have any questions, just give Jeremy or Gracie a call/text --we are happy to help!
For women, we recommend wearing a "lehenga," "salwar kameez," "sari," or an "anarkali suit." Bright colors are encouraged and any color is acceptable except white! Here are examples of each type of outfit:
Lehenga: A long skirt paired with a blouse (commonly referred to as the "choli"). (The purple outfit and the green outfit Gracie is wearing in the above photos)
Salwar kameez / Anarkali suit (sometimes websites refer to this as a woman's "kurta set"): A combination of a medium-length or long dress with comfy trousers or leggings.
Sari: A long piece of fabric (usually 6 yards) that is draped around the body. It is usually worn together with a short fitted blouse/choli. These can be difficult to put on if you've never done it before. Lots of helpful videos on YouTube!
For men, we recommend wearing a nice kurta set or a number of Indian suits as detailed below:
Kurta Set & Kotis: A kurta is the most common men's outfit. It is a knee-length tunic shirt that reaches below the knees, paired with tight- fitting pants (The purple outfit Jeremy is wearing in the above photo). If you want to spruce it up, you should also consider wearing a vest or "koti" (or "nehru" jacket) on top.
Sherwani: This offers a more upscale, elegant look with some embroidery and heavier fabric. It's a long-sleeved coat that is buttoned up to your neck. To complete the look you pair with slim pajama or "churidar" pants.
